This strategic initiative aims to recruit dedicated individuals for our Casual Merchandiser Talent Pool, creating a ready resource of pre-screened candidates for future opportunities. This is not merely a job posting but an invitation to begin a structured pathway with a premier retail brand known for its exacting standards and customer-centric philosophy. We are seeking industrious, detail-oriented individuals who understand that exceptional merchandising is the silent engine of retail success. By joining this talent pool, you position yourself at the forefront of consideration for roles where you will be instrumental in maintaining Dis-Chem’s iconic store presentation, ensuring optimal product availability, and contributing directly to sales performance. This role is ideal for those seeking flexible, part-time work with the potential for growth within a respected national retailer that actively champions employment equity and the inclusion of People with Disabilities.

Detailed Job Purpose and Core Responsibilities

The primary purpose of the Casual Merchandiser role is to rigorously uphold and execute fundamental Dis-Chem merchandising standards while delivering consistent, excellent customer service. You will serve as a critical agent in the retail supply chain, ensuring the sales floor is a perfectly stocked, organized, and inviting environment that drives customer engagement and facilitates purchase decisions. Your core operational responsibility will be to restock merchandise proactively to guarantee maximum sales potential, managing the flow of goods from the storeroom to the shelf with precision. This includes ensuring all delivered or pulled stock is stored and packed in its correct allocated space promptly, adhering to strict First-In-First-Out (FIFO) stock rotation protocols to minimize wastage. You will conduct vigilant checks to ensure no stock on the shelves has reached its sell-by date, reporting any damaged or expired items to management immediately. Maintaining the full range of products on display at all times is paramount, requiring you to report low stock levels and out-of-stock items systematically.

Beyond stock management, your role encompasses the physical and visual integrity of the store. You will build, maintain, and face up merchandising displays according to established planograms and store layouts, ensuring all products are neatly presented, clearly visible, and correctly priced. Daily physical upkeep of the store and your designated areas, both on the shop floor and in the storeroom, is a key requirement. This involves practical tasks such as flattening and disposing of empty boxes, assisting with loading and off-loading stock, and meticulously marking items without barcodes. You will provide crucial support during stocktaking procedures and assist with training new staff members as required. A fundamental aspect of the role is customer interaction; you must provide friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance, following up on customer stock queries and ensuring any issues are resolved promptly, thereby embodying the Dis-Chem service ethos with every task you perform.

Minimum Requirements and Candidate Competencies

To qualify for entry into the Dis-Chem Casual Merchandiser Talent Pool, candidates must satisfy essential criteria that reflect the role’s demands. The non-negotiable minimum requirement is a Grade 12 or Matric certificate. While up to six months of general retail experience is essential, candidates with at least one year of specific retail experience will have a distinct advantage. Basic computer literacy in MS Office is required for administrative communication and potential report interaction. Given the nature of retail, you must be willing and able to work flexible retail hours, including weekends and public holidays. Special conditions of employment further stipulate that you must be physically fit and able to safely lift and move heavy boxes, possess reliable transport and/or reside in close proximity to the Bedford Square store, be a South African citizen, and have clear credit and criminal records.

The competencies for success in this position are both practical and behavioral. A strong command of the English language is essential for clear communication with team members, management, and customers; bilingual ability is a notable advantage. You must be consistently presentable, reflecting the brand’s image. The role demands effective engagement skills to build rapport with customers and collaborate with staff, underpinned by unwavering trustworthiness and honesty. Excellent time management is critical to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Advantageous competencies include knowledge of formal merchandising standards and the FMCG industry, specific product and category knowledge, and the ability to analyse basic stock reports like ZMORE for ordering purposes. A vigilant attitude, including the willingness to report any suspicious behavior observed on the shop floor, is also valued.

Application Process and Important Talent Pool Considerations

Interested candidates are urged to submit a comprehensive CV before the closing date of 11 February 2026. It is imperative for applicants to understand the nature of a talent pool initiative. Inclusion in this talent pool significantly increases your visibility and chances of being contacted when a suitable casual merchandising position arises at the Bedford Square store. However, it does not constitute an immediate offer of employment or guarantee eventual placement. Dis-Chem Pharmacies is an equal opportunity employer whose recruitment processes are guided by its approved Employment Equity Plan and Targets, aligned with the company’s broader Transformation Strategy. We encourage applications from all qualified individuals. The remuneration for any subsequent position offered will be market-related. By applying, you acknowledge your understanding of these terms and express your readiness to contribute to maintaining the high standards that define the Dis-Chem shopping experience.
