Job Advert Summary
The Gauteng Department of Health’s Ekurhuleni Health District invites dedicated and detail-oriented individuals to apply for the critical role of Stores Assistant within its Logistics Directorate. This position forms the operational backbone of the district’s medical supply chain, ensuring the efficient and accurate management of vital stock that supports healthcare service delivery across facilities. We are seeking a proactive individual with a strong work ethic, basic administrative acumen, and a commitment to supporting the public healthcare system. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity within the Gauteng Provincial Government for candidates seeking to build a stable and meaningful career in public service logistics, offering a competitive salary with benefits and the chance to contribute directly to community health outcomes through impeccable stock control and distribution.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meticulously meet the following stipulated criteria to be considered. The minimum educational requirement is an AET Level 4 (which is equivalent to a Standard 7 or Grade 9 school report). Alternatively, possession of a full Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate) is acceptable. Crucially, all candidates must have a minimum of six (6) months of appropriate and verifiable experience working in a stores, warehouse, or inventory control environment. This experience is non-negotiable. Candidates must demonstrate good organizing and planning skills in their application. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for interacting with colleagues and healthcare end-users. While not mandatory, possession of a valid driver’s license, a professional driving permit (PDP), and basic computer literacy will be considered significant added advantages that enhance the candidate’s suitability for the full scope of duties.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be entrusted with a range of vital logistics functions under supervision. Your core duty will be to assist with the systematic issuing of stock from shelves using the official VA2 form, ensuring accuracy and adherence to requisitions. You will be responsible for packing and arranging received stock according to the FIFO (First In, First Out) principle, processing these receipts via the VA7 form. Maintaining the central stock register (VA11) is a critical daily task; you must accurately record all issued transactions on this document and diligently update it during stock receipt processes. Physical logistics form a major part of the role, including the offloading of bulk stock from delivery trucks, which requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. You will be accountable for the basic housekeeping of the storeroom, including sweeping and ensuring the cleanliness of the stores, corridors, and immediate surrounding areas to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
You will be required to participate as a member of the official stock-taking team for the Ekurhuleni Health District, contributing to accurate biannual or annual inventory counts. A key service delivery component is ensuring that all issued stock is promptly and safely delivered to the correct end-users within the healthcare facilities. You will assist supervisors with compiling reports on issued stock and tracking outstanding requisitions. If in possession of the required licenses, you may be tasked with assisting in the collection and delivery of bulk stock from suppliers such as the Government Printing Works or performing other driving duties within the section’s operational needs. As with all public service roles, you must be prepared to perform any other reasonable duties as delegated by your supervisor to meet the operational demands of the logistics unit.
