About the Role

The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking a dedicated and conscientious Porter to join the dynamic team within the Patient Administration directorate at the SMU Oral Health Centre. This position is far more than a logistical role; it is a frontline embodiment of patient-centred care. As the first and often most frequent point of non-clinical contact for patients and visitors, the Porter plays an indispensable part in shaping the patient experience. You will be the vital link that ensures the smooth, safe, and dignified transition of patients throughout the healthcare facility, directly contributing to the efficiency of clinical services and the overall operational flow of the hospital. This role demands a unique blend of physical stamina, interpersonal sensitivity, and a profound sense of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will be multifaceted, focusing on patient logistics, equipment management, and adherence to stringent health and safety protocols. You will be entrusted with the following core responsibilities:

· Patient Logistics and Support: Safely and carefully loading and offloading patients from private vehicles and ambulances. You will accompany both walking and non-walking patients to various clinical departments and wards across the facility, including Dr. George Mukhari wards, providing reassurance and clear direction.
· Infection Prevention and Control: Maintaining a clean and safe environment is paramount. You will be responsible for the proper segregation of used Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and general waste in accordance with health standards.
· Equipment Stewardship: Managing mobile patient equipment is a key task. This involves collecting unused equipment from units such as MFOS and Theatre, performing routine cleaning of wheelchairs and other apparatus to prepare them for re-use, and promptly reporting any lost, damaged, or dysfunctional equipment to your supervisor.
· Operational Flexibility: To ensure continuous service delivery, you must be prepared to rotate and operate as a reliever in all porter sections as requested by your supervisor. This requires adaptability and a comprehensive understanding of different areas within the hospital.
· Professional Conduct: Wearing an official name tag for identification is compulsory. You will adhere strictly to instructions given by supervisory staff and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, acting with tact and discretion in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following non-negotiable criteria:

· A Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.
· A valid driver’s licence (NB: An exception will be granted for people with disabilities where a driver’s licence is mandatory).

Essential Competencies and Attributes

We are looking for an individual who possesses not only the qualifications but also the character and skills to excel in this demanding environment:

· Policy Awareness: A basic understanding of key healthcare policies and principles, including the Batho Pele Principles, the Patients’ Rights Charter, Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Six Priorities, and National Core Standards.
· Interpersonal Excellence: Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact compassionately and effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and at different levels of distress.
· Resilience and Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work calmly and efficiently under pressure, both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
· Organisational Proficiency: Strong planning and organisational skills, with the competency to handle tasks of a multidisciplinary nature and liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
· Personal Integrity: Must be self-motivated, reliable, and exhibit a high degree of tact, discretion, and professionalism in handling confidential situations.
